'"Insatiable" is a true classic in every sense of the word. If it were a car, it would be a Ferrari. If it were a drink, it'd be Dom Perignon. If it were a woman, it'd be Marilyn Chambers. Truly there is nobody else who could possibly have risen to the challenge of the title role better than Chambers and this film, despite arriving relatively late in the first phase of her career, contains unquestionably her defining performance.
'The plot isn't exactly complicated but it's nonetheless nicely scripted and very well acted. It just follows a couple of days spent in the company of world renowned model/actress Sandra Chase (Chambers) as she travels through London and reminisces about some of her previous sexual escapades. The character of Sandra Chase is kind of a tragic one: she suffers (and yes, at times there is a feeling of genuine suffering coming from Chambers) from uncontrollable nymphomania and terminal loneliness. Being an heiress to a vast fortune (her parents were both killed in an accident shortly after Sandra came of age) and being an actress/model to boot, she finds it impossible to meet people who want her for anything other than her status and, conversely, because of her overwhelming need for sex, she just uses them for pleasure as casually as they use her for cash/status.
'This is pretty much all there is to the story, but the film focuses far more sex scenes that, almost without exception, have become the stuff of true XXX legend. Chambers' enthusiasm and ability to stay in character throughout her scenes elevate all of her screentime to a whole new plateau. The scene in which a young, spoilt-brat Sandra loses her virginity to the handsome but tough-as-nails gardener, on the pool table no less, is absolutely breathtaking erotica and one of the hottest things I've seen onscreen. It harks back to a time when adult films actually made some effort to stimulate the viewer's imagination and play up to their fantasies, instead of just parading a series of bored, anonymous, humping robots across the screen. Honestly, if you're into XXX cinema and you've not seen the pool table scene, you really OWE it to yourself to. It's not just Chambers who shines here though. A romantic, outdoor scene by moonlight between John Leslie and Jessie St James is easily one of the best things I've seen from either of them. Certainly "couples-friendly" sex gets no hotter, no more passionate and no more genuinely loving than this.
'The whole film is put together with great care and attention and production values that far excel anything I've seen before or after, in terms of porn films. The sets, scenery and mood are all extremely classy and it's full of elaborate camerawork (plenty of helicopter shots) and tight editing. In fact, "Insatiable" is such a class act you almost feel $1,000,000 richer just for watching it. It even has a custom-made funk soundtrack with some of the funniest lyrics you've heard ("Suck it faster, Sandy, suck it faster!") just to prove there's a sense of humour in amongst the decadent extravagance. A genuine apex. Grab a glass of champagne, sit back and enjoy!'
